It all began in 1983 when the Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA) set up the Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology (NEGST). The foundational aim of the school was to equip pastors with higher-level learning and skills above the basic certificate and diploma level that was available in the country. As the School grew, it finally received its Charter in 2011 to become the Africa International University, and progressed to further provide students across the region with undergraduate programmes in Counselling Psychology, Development Studies, IT and Business. 

As a higher education institution, Africa International University now offers high-level training across a number of academic programmes. They provide students with access to diploma-level, undergraduate-level, graduate-level, and doctoral-level programmes. They also provide research programmes that give their students the foundation to better understand their society and the world all-round. The institute's courses span across four different academic schools of study; the School of Theology, the School of Business and Economics, the School of Education, Arts, and Social Sciences (SEAS), and the Institute for the Study of African Realities.
