ABOUT KENYA TECHNICAL TRAINERS COLLEGE (KTTC)

A Government institution that falls under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, the Kenya Technical Trainers College opened its doors in 1978, giving access to its first students in technical training. It was established with the purpose of training technically skilled personnel who would become highly qualified and equipped employees for all job sectors in Kenya and beyond.

The demand for more technical teachers led to the Kenyan Government collaborating with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in discussing the best direction to pursue in fulfilling this technical training void. The Kenya Technical Trainers College (KTTC) was born from these discussions with a legal mandate to provide technical institutions with trained technical teachers. It has since expanded in its course offering and student population. It now stands as one of the leading technical training colleges in Eastern and Central Africa. At first, the college’s teaching faculty comprised of mainly Canadians but through training a high number of Kenyan teachers in Canadian universities, the college was able to replace the Canadian teaching staff with Kenyans of equal caliber.

The college’s core functions are to train technical teachers who’ll teach in various secondary schools and tertiary institutions. It develops quality and relevant curricula that meets the demands of the labour market. They additionally foster entrepreneurial skills and culture amongst their faculty, staff and students, while maintaining and developing partnerships with various industry partners and institutions in enhancing quality and relevant training. The higher learning institution provides courses cutting across; education, computer literacy, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, business, mathematics and applied sciences, information studies, English, building and civil engineering amongst others. They offer adaptable modes of learning, providing students with part-time learning, full-time learning and Open, Distance and eLearning (ODeL).

At the training college, all students must undertake an industrial attachment which gives a practical, hands-on application of the knowledge they’ve acquired. Students get their training levels enhanced in acquired skills, competencies, knowledge and attitude. At the training institution, students also have access to;

- Counselling services that provide students with the personal support and assistance they need in coping with any academic, personal, social and career concerns. They have individual counselling, and various group counselling activities such as group meetings, workshops, seminars and trainings.

- Teaching Practice through the institution’s dedicated department, the Teaching Practice Coordination Department (TPCD). Students are placed in Teaching Practice Institutions where they get hands-on experience, guidance and training within real-life settings.

- ICT Services provided at the ICT center which gives students access to a Learning Resource Center (LRC) that comprises a documentation center, a cyber and a training room equipped with interactive smart boards.

- Library and e-resources to provide students with the learning materials and tools they need to effectively study on-campus and off-campus.

Kenya Teachers Training College is dedicated to providing the job market with highly trained, knowledgeable and skilled technical personnel. Their vision is to be “a first class Institution in Technical Teacher Education and Technology”.

"I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for KTTC. I've taught at a large number of schools across the country and this all started through the education and support I received at KTTC."
