Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) was established in 1971 as Western College of Arts and Applied Sciences (WECO). The establishment was set up in response to the needs of the people of Western Province, who were in need of a learning institution that would provide training for technical manpower requirements for the region. The institution later grew to become a constituent college of Moi University in 2002 and later elevated to a full university in 2007.

From a college of Arts and Applied Sciences awarding certificates and diplomas in technical courses, they have grown to offer students short courses, diploma programmes, certificate courses, undergraduate programmes and post-graduate programmes. Masinde Muliro University is a student-centered university, their whole premise being centered on the quality sustenance of their students’ academic and personal-development needs.
