ABOUT SANG'ALO INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
Sang’alo Institute of Science & Technology (SIST) is a public institute of Technology in Bungoma County, Kenya that was established in 1977. The institution is mainly focused on agriculture and related innovations but also offers business, hospitality and engineering courses. Initially the aim of the “center” was to research and implement known ways of improving productivity of the local animal stock in Bungoma after it was setup in 1927. The 610 acres of land that the college sits on was a donation from the Paramount Chief of Bukusu in 1924, to a Scottish veterinarian for the purposes of vaccination and treatment of Livestock.
Sang’alo Institute of Science and Technology is an open institution and allows admission from all nationalities, gender and religion. Other than the administration, the students have a governing council that acts as a bridge between the management and students. The institution is legally allowed to examine its own set exams by virtue of being a Government institution. Regardless of such accreditations, Sang’alo Institute of Science and Technology has still entered into partnerships with various institutions including KALRO – Kakamega (a Government institution), Masinde Muliro University and Kibabii University. The institution is an agricultural champion and has exchange programs with institutions in Netherlands. The first admissions of the institution were 20 students in 1977, they were enrolled to study general agriculture. The school was handed over to the Government in 1993 and received its first group of Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC) teachers.
The goals of research have persisted and the current administration and student population have also participated and patented some class innovations. These have been targeting green energy and efficiency (especially running costs). Case in point is the solar powered Lawn Mower, the Solar Tent, Solar Powered Irrigation Pump, The Orange Potato, Torsoy Health Drink, Visitor Registration Module and Fish Scale Mouthwash. Special mention is the “Village Battery” that uses water and salt solution.
Students in the school participate and have won in various sports disciplines. There is enough land in the school for pitches and courts for sports and events. Academically the students also enjoy the advantage of having an alumni association, computer labs, library, accommodation, counselling and transport. From State House to Cairo Invites, the institution has championed innovation and some of its work are undergoing patenting or incubation in various organizations. The plan is to enhance research and improve the community living around the school and the country at large.
