The syllabus is designed to offer four distinct areas with specializations in Plant pathology/Crop protection, Microbiology, Genetics, and Plant Biology. Most of the Courses are practical in nature and job market oriented. The students who take Botany Courses may become plant pathologists, crop protectionists in agricultural and research establishments, microbiologists, lecturers and professors, Botanists in Kenya Wildlife Services, and Museums, research officers, researchers, extension workers etc. They can also work as Biotechnologists with (Biotechnology) companies.
The programme aims to provide a broad background in plant sciences through classroom, laboratory and field experience in the major areas of plant sciences. Undergraduates majoring in Botany are given a broad background in plant sciences. Majors as professionals in the plant sciences are prepared for advanced study in Botany and other biological fields as well as in the applied plant sciences such as horticulture, crop science, plant pathology, resource management and environmental biology, teaching and research. The department also offers service Courses to students from other departments. The main objectives of the programme are: i) To equip the students with adequate practical and theoretical knowledge in plant sciences. ii) To prepare students for advanced study in Botany and other biological fields and applied sciences. iii) To train graduates who are able to teach, do research and handle botanical engagement in private and public enterprises.
