Course Overview

The courses to be taught in this programme will address the interrelationships between the physical, chemical and biological aspects of aquatic systems, including land-water interactions. Over the past decade, questions related to surveillance and utilisation of aquatic resources, have frequently been raised in local and international fora. Conservation of aquatic ecosystems in Kenya has been hampered by lack of knowledge on how these systems function and this programme endeavours to fill this gap which has been existing for a long time. Studies in Limnology have not received much attention in eastern Africa. This is unfortunate owing to the intimacy existing between fresh water ecosystems and the human community. It is because of this that the programme will endeavour to produce graduates able to engage in self-employment as fishermen, fish farmers, aquaculturists, water quality consultants, and can also be employed as fisheries officers/managers, policy makers and environmental health officers. In addition, the graduates can be employed as researchers or lecturers in freshwater research institutes, universities, consultancy firms, Ministry of water and in other private and non-governmental organizations.

Further, the course will produce limnologists able to provide advice and/or guidance on matters related to the utilization and management of inland aquatic systems. In the long term perspective, an important goal shall be to produce a cadre of qualified scientists to tackle the multitude of challenging problems of tropical limnology especially in African lakes, rivers and wetlands.
