Keeping plants healthy requires an understanding of the organisms and agents that cause disease, their management as well as how plants grow and are affected by disease. The courses to be offered in this programme include Mycology, Bacteriology, Nematology, Virology, and abiotic plant disease causal agents. Kenya‘s economy being agriculture-based requires more trained plant pathologists to deal with the problem of perennial food deficits and to realize the vision 2030.
It is in pursuit of this, that this programme will endeavour to produce graduates able to work in agricultural consulting firms, agrichemical companies, seed and plant product companies, plant disease diagnostic laboratories, Botanical gardens and arboreta, Biotechnology firms, Forestry Departments, public policy organizations and serve in private practice. In addition, the graduates can also be engaged in research and teaching in Colleges and Universities, National/International Agricultural research institutes, Ministry of Agriculture and in other private and non-governmental organizations.

The programme is designed to train and produce skilled plant pathologists needed to preserve plant health, preserve the environment, invent new ways to control plant diseases and ensure adequate food supply. Further, the course will produce plant pathologists able to provide consultancy, extension and teaching in academic institutions. In the long term perspective, an important goal shall be to produce a cadre of qualified scientists to tackle the multitude challenging problems of sustainable food production worldwide.
What are the admission criteria?Applicants should be holders of M.Sc in Plant Pathology, or related disciplines from Egerton University or any other recognized University.
