In view of the increasingly important status that Kiswahili continues to acquire as it spreads around the world, there is urgent need for development of knowledge in the area beyond the Masters level. Scholars who are well-versed not only in Kiswahili language but also in Kiswahili Literature (Fasihi) are highly valued in colleges and universities around the world. In the East African Community (EAC), where Kiswahili constitutes a national language, experts in Kiswahili are required in all aspects of life, including schools and universities, examination bodies, government departments, commerce, and cultural organizations, etc. Besides, as a developing language, Kiswahili needs experts in pertinent areas such as vocabulary development, linguistic standardization, storage of information, translation, etc. Equally importantly, there is need for creative writers to raise the standards and expand the production of literature written in the language. Kiswahili also plays a central role in cementing national cohesion in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and other East African states. The Ph.D. degree in Kiswahili at Egerton endeavours to produce graduates who encompass all the required skills in that regard.
