The Technical University of Mombasa traces its origin back to the late 1940's when consultations were made towards its establishment. It is one of the oldest higher learning institutions in Kenya. It was established to provide quality technical education to the Muslim student population in East Africa. It later grew in 2013, from the technical education center it was, to become the fully-fledged Technical University of Mombasa, that it is today.

During its inception, the university started with two well established faculties and two schools: Faculty of Applied Health Science, and Faculty of Engineering and Technology; and School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Now students can pursue a certificate, diploma, undergraduate or graduate-level programme across School of Business, School of Engineering, School of Applied Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Institute of Computing and Informatics. The university's courses cut across different fields such as Computing, Engineering, Business, Humanities and Social Science, Applied Science and Medicine. Their programmes provide emphasis on the technical bit of the courses, to acquaint their learners with the most sort-after skills by employers.
