Established as the Co-operative College of Kenya in 1967, the College core focus was to train personnel of co-operative societies and unions while also catering to government officials. The growing need for co-operative business education and training, drove the expansion of the college where they began offering diploma courses. Come 2016, Co-operative University of Kenya was awarded a Charter, making them become a pillar of higher learning in the country and pushing the agenda further, to facilitate co-operatives with fully-trained and equipped graduates.
Co-operative University offers students access to diploma, undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in their School of Co-operative and Community Development, School of Business and Economics, and Directorate of Computing and e-Learning.
