ABOUT JARAMOGI OGINGA ODINGA UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Bondo, Kenya was granted charter by H.E. Emilio Mwai Kibaki on 13th February, 2013, officially making it the 16th Public University in Kenya. Formerly, the university was Bondo Teacher’s Training College (TTC), then it became a constituent college of Maseno University before finally being autonomous. Like other public universities the institution is run by a senate.
The University is focused in community welfare research and programs such as Food Sustainability Research and capacity building in the area of food security. That notwithstanding, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) has a growing influence in Information Communication Technology with the introduction of the Cyber Security and Computing Forensics course. This is the first such course offered in the country. The University operates in three divisions namely: Academic; Research, Innovation and Outreach; Planning and Administration and Finance divisions. Applications to the university are based on qualifications and certifications for the respective course. Otherwise the institution has an open admission policy without bias for gender, nationality or religion.
The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology has 4 branches with its main campus located in Bondo and its other campuses being in Kisii, Kisumu and Nambale. The University has gotten some high level sponsorship from the likes of the World Bank for their revolutionary Insect Research in Action: Green Insect. This focuses on sustainable use of insects for Africa’s Dietary Needs. Other than Research, Innovations and Technology, the university also has an outreach and extension service and Farm and Field Station program.
The Academic division is charged with among other things student welfare: sports, accommodation and student governance. The university’s efforts in student advancement in commerce has seen it win the Enactus Kenya Expo twice and rank amongst the top 16 in the world in an event in California, US. Away from academics, the university has also excelled in performance arts of the likes of Drama. The drama team has put on a number of good shows in national competitions a couple of times winning recognition and awards. Separately, their sporting teams also regularly participate in countrywide competitions.
JOOUST in collaboration with the Siaya County are planning to set up a Barack Obama University in honour of the Former US. President Barack Obama whose father comes from Siaya. The University in question will replace the current Siaya Agricultural Training Center. The university is also poised to start offering cultural programs for elders on the promotion of cultural practices. JOOUST also host the East African Community Integration Institute.
