Through the spirit of Harambe, Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology was established to operate as a public technical training institute in Kenya. It was established in 1973 and operates under the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology of Kenya. The growing need for technical training in the region has seen to the growth of this higher learning institution.

Students at Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) are able to get technical, industrial, vocational and entrepreneurial training. The higher education institute is driven to produce highly competent graduates who can acclimatize with ease into the job market and pursue their careers successfully. KIST provides students with craft, certificate and diploma level academic programmes. It has six academic departments, namely; Department of Applied Sciences, Department of Hospitality, Department of Business and Liberal Studies, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Department of Computer Studies and Department of Building and Civil Engineering. They offer a wide variety of courses that span across bakery technology, human resources management, computer science, information communication technology, business management, electrical and electronic engineering, secretarial studies, sales and marketing, science laboratory technology, architecture, applied statistics to name a few.

Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology offers an affordable fee structure with foreign students paying an additional 20%. They are built on ensuring their academic offering and quality technical training is accessible to as many students across the region. Students can learn at a full-time or part-time learning capacity. The campus provides students with the academic resources and learning environment they need to excel, with students having access to;

- Counselling services that are free and confidential for any KIST student and staff. Students have access to individual and group counselling activities that will ensure any of their personal, academic, career or social concerns are catered to. Students can also get helpful information and access resources that will provide them with the support and guidance they need.

- Financial assistance services for students who require the financial support to pursue their academic dreams. KIST offers access to scholarships and education loans that enable a high number of students to have access to their higher learning programs.
