ABOUT MAASAI MARA UNIVERSITY
Maasai Mara University is a Kenyan Public University, situated in Narok County. The institution was established in 2013 and was previously known as Narok University an affiliate of Moi University. The University focuses on research and inspired teaching. It has a huge network of global partnerships and encourages interaction between researchers and the local community.
The Maasai Mara University is known for its research on water challenges facing drylands and wetlands. Its focus is generally on pastoralist communities and water in their school of Natural Resource and Animal Sciences. On this front the university has partnered with the Chinese Government and Chinese Academy, this partnership has seen it build a botanical garden for the university. The partnership also gave the university a water treatment and analysis system. The two have also co-hosted multiple conferences that attracted high level participation from the likes of: - Alliance of International Science Organizations (AISO) and Sino-Africa Joint Research Center (SAJOREC). The latest was the Biodiversity Conservation Forum.
Other than the said courses, the institution also offers Education, Science & Information Sciences, Arts & Social Sciences, Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Studies, Business and Economics and Health Sciences. These courses are examined by the university exam council and where necessary are examined under other institutions and affiliations. To achieve mastery of these courses, Maasai Mara University has further partners with Regents University-London - U.K, Clemson University - U.S.A, University of Bordeaux – France, Aarhus University – Denmark, Kenya Industrial Estates, University of Hertfordshire, London U.K and University of Munster, Germany. Most of Maasai Mara university’s partnerships are in the line of research.
The university has an open admission policy and accepts all gender, nationalities and religions. Students are provided with accommodation and transport while in campus. They are also allowed to form a governing council, clubs, societies, recreational and sports groups. One such group participated in a tree planting exercise in the Mau Forest under the facilitation of the Government of Kenya. The sports teams are annual participants at the Kenya University Games and Performance Arts Festivals. The university is one of the few in the country which have a healthcare center. The students also benefit from a modern well stocked library. Among the known research undertaken by the university is a sewerage treatment system.
Maasai Mara University in conjunction with others like Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) are also researching herbal medicine. The institution also occasionally gives public lectures for community sensitization drives.
