ABOUT NAIROBI TECHNICAL TRAINING INSTITUTE
Nairobi Technical Training Institute was founded in 1951 as a “Modern High School” catering predominantly for the Asian community residing in the neighborhood. The curriculum at the time encompassed Mechanical Engineering and Carpentry & Joinery. The institution’s name was eventually changed to Technical High School and after independence the school opened doors to all races. The curriculum continues to specialize in technical education and was expanded to include Plant Mechanical, Woodwork, Electrical and Motor Vehicle Mechanics skills. Nairobi Technical Training Institute aims to develop highly skilled graduates in Technical, Vocational, Innovation, Business and Research for the global market. It is a public tertiary institution under the Ministry of Education, State Department of Vocational and Technical Training. The Government supports the institution through grants, training equipment and personnel.
In order to achieve its mandate of creating and continuously providing relevant and up-to-date technological skills required by an advancing industrial economy, the Government has continually funded infrastructure development at Nairobi Technical Training Institute, in various fields including Health and Applied Sciences and is expanding existing Science laboratories to accommodate the ultra-modern equipment received from African Development Bank.
Nairobi Technical Training Institute has an Information communication and technology center equipped with modern training facilities and has refurbished the engineering departments in order to offer market driven courses using modern equipment and technology.
Courses approved by the Ministry of education include Higher National Diploma in the following courses: HND in Human Resource Management, HND in Food Science Technology (Quality control) and HND in Electrical Engineering (Power Option). To make it accessible to students, Nairobi Technical Training institute is registered with the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) which manages student placements for various diploma courses offered in the Institute.
The institute has been certified by the Kenya Bureau of standards which has enabled it to maintain its high levels of performance. Nairobi Technical Training Institute has collaborated with various institutions like the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the University of Nairobi in the area of Health and Applied Sciences in capacity building for the teaching staff. Electrical and electronic engineering diploma students have a training partnership with Samsung Electronics through Samsung Engineering Academy. Kenya Renewable Energy Association (KEREA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are also in collaboration with the institute to train Solar PV technicians.
The levels of training in the Nairobi Technical Training Institute include:
- Artisan Courses: Entry requirement is usually a KCSE Certificate and above. On qualifying at this level, students can progress to the next level of Craft Certificate.
- Craft Certificate Courses: (Modular Based). Minimum entry requirements to these courses is usually a KCSE mean grade D (plain) for Module One and PASS for Module Two. Upon completion of Certificate Courses, students can proceed to Diploma Courses.
- Diploma Courses: (Modular Based). Entry requirements at this level is usually a KCSE mean grade C- (minus) and different cluster subjects for different courses.
Nairobi Technical Training Institute has a wide range of departments including Health and Applied Sciences, Automotive Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, Institutional Management, Business Studies, Information and Communication Technology, Liberal Studies, Guidance and Counseling, and Games and Sports. Students are able to take on any of these courses either via full-time or part-time learning at the institute. As a facility serving higher learning opportunities to students region-wide, NTTI strives to develop students holistically so they can become leaders in their different fields.
