The PhD in crop protection program trains to manage and advice on a wide variety of crop biotic stresses detrimental to agricultural production. The graduate gets opportunity to broaden their research knowledge in crop protection as they gain efficient and effective technologies for the sustainable management of crop pests and other areas of crop protection. Agriculture, which is the main economic activity in Kenya, is often faced with the major challenge of reducing crop losses from diseases, pests and weeds while safeguarding the environment. This has resulted in a large proportion of crop production expenses going to crop protection activities. The PhD in Crop Protection program has been designed to help meet the great demand for scientific expertise, in developing and applying appropriate crop protection practices to enhance crop production, crop quality and environmental protection.

Admission Criteria

i) The common regulations for the Doctorate degree as specified in the statutes of Egerton University shall be applicable;ii) In addition, the candidate should have a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Sciences or related disciplines;iii) Proof of knowledge in or, successful completion of MSc programme from accredited university is required;iv) A Ph.D. Programme applicant who meets the requirements must submit a Research Project Proposal acceptable to the Department.35.4 Course Structure and Durationi) The PhD programme shall be completed through research, thesis and successful oral examinations;ii) Candidates may register for full-time or part-time doctorate programme;iii) Fulltime programme shall run for a minimum of 36 consecutive months and a period not exceeding 60 consecutive months, unless with prior approved deferment;iv) Part-time programme shall run for a period not exceeding 84 consecutive months, unless with prior approved deferment;v) A candidate may be discontinued on failure to demonstrate positive progress for two consecutive reporting quarters unless with prior approved deferment;vi) The PhD candidate shall be required to conduct an original research under the supervision of Egerton University academic staff and any other person(s) recommended by the Faculty of Agriculture and approved by the Senate.
