Modern livestock production face new challenges and opportunities of sustaining food production and farmers‘ income, food safety, biodiversity, and conservation of common resources. Environmentalists, consumers and public authorities are concerned about the negative impacts that animal production could have on the environment and are pressurising farmers to comply with a series of new restrictive regulations. The MSc programme in Livestock Production Systems is to develop systems thinking in analysing and designing sustainable livestock production for wide practical farming circumstances. Masters of Science Degree in Livestock Production Systems is a programme to build capacity in integration of scientific, technological and management approaches with holistic analytical skills for addressing biological, ecological and socio-economic constraints and opportunities in livestock production and development. It is designed to explore sustainable management options in response to emerging concerns of environmentalists, consumers and public authorities about the negative impacts of animal production on the environment. With the concerns increasing, farmers are under pressure to adapt management strategies compliant with a series of new restrictive regulations. The programme consists of coursework, research and a thesis. The coursework covers environmental physiology, animal welfare and agro-biodiversity, sustainable management of livestock feeds and genetic resources, and statistical techniques for modelling livestock production systems. There is exposure to techniques for environmental impact assessment and monitoring and evaluation of extension service delivery.The MSc Livestock Production Systems programme equips graduates with scientific and technological knowledge with holistic analytical skills for explaining, exploring and predicting the productivity and adaptive capacity of livestock production systems. The graduates are trained and educated to become self-directed analysts and decision-makers to sufficiently advise on, analyse and design sustainable livestock systems, for wide practical farming circumstances.

Admission Criteria

i) The common regulations for the Master's degree in all faculties as specified in statutes of Egerton University shall be applicable;ii) The programme shall be open to holders of BSc degree with an upper second class or an equivalent grade in: Animal Production, Agriculture, Agricultural education and extension, Environmental science, Range Management, and Veterinary Medicine. Other acceptable degree programmes are those deemed relevant by the Department of Animal Sciences from institutions recognised by the Egerton University Senate;iii) A candidate with lower second class and relevant experience and scientific publications in refereed journals may be recommended for admission. In certain situations, the candidate may be required to take some prescribed undergraduate courses in which a pass with a B grade shall be a requirement for granting admission.
